Whole-system duct and dryer vent check with before-and-after photos - you see exactly what came out of your vents

Worth knowing

That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Dusty Vents Right After Cleaning

What’s Happening

If your vents are dusty again within days of a duct cleaning, the most likely explanation is that the cleaning was incomplete – debris was stirred but not extracted, and it has simply resettled. A second possibility is that your system has an active leak or a compromised filter bypass pulling fresh dust into the duct runs continuously. Either way, a surface wipe doesn’t fix it.

Call (806) 606-6902

Dust that reappears this quickly is telling you something specific. Either the cleaning crew didn’t reach the full length of each run – just the registers and a few feet in – or there is an ongoing source feeding the system. Rotobrush-style rotary contact cleaning followed by negative-air extraction removes debris in a single pass; a shop vac at the register does not. If you were quoted a low flat fee and the crew was in and out in under an hour for a full house, the second scenario is almost certain. The dust on your vents now is the same dust that was always there. It just moved for a little while.

Why It Happens

1. The Previous Cleaning Didn’t Reach the Whole Run

Most duct systems have runs that extend 15 to 30 feet from the plenum to the register. A vacuum positioned at the register opening creates suction only for the first few feet. Debris further back loosens, migrates toward the register, and reappears on the face within days. If the crew didn’t use a brush or agitation tool visible from the register opening – or if the job took less than two to three hours for an average-sized house – this is almost certainly what happened. You’ll often see the dust reappear in a circular pattern matching the airflow pattern of the register grille.

2. A Duct Leak Is Pulling Unconditioned Air Into the System

Flex duct connections pull apart over time. Hard pipe joints lose their mastic seal. When a section of duct runs through an attic, crawlspace, or wall cavity, a gap as small as a quarter-inch draws in insulation fibers, construction dust, or outdoor particulates every time the system runs. The tell is a consistent fine gray or pinkish dust – often fiberglass – reappearing at specific registers and not others. If the dust pattern is uneven across the house, focus on the registers showing the most accumulation; that’s likely where the leak is closest.

3. The Filter Is Bypassed or the Wrong Size

A filter that doesn’t seal completely around its edges – or a filter rated too low for your system’s air volume – passes fine particles directly into the supply and return plenum. This is one of the most overlooked causes of persistent duct dust because everything looks fine at a glance: the filter is there, it’s been changed recently, the system is running. The diagnostic check is to hold a piece of white tissue near the filter edges while the system is running. Any flutter or visible gap means air is moving around the filter, not through it, and the duct system is getting coarser dust than it should.

4. The Return System Is Drawing From an Unintended Source

In older construction especially, return air pathways are sometimes carved out of wall cavities, floor joist bays, or unconditioned spaces rather than dedicated sheet metal. These paths pick up whatever is in those spaces – insulation, debris, rodent activity, construction material. If your return grilles are floor-mounted and your house has a crawlspace, or if your returns are in the wall and the house was built before 1990, this is worth checking. The sign is dust with an unusual composition: gritty rather than fibrous, or with visible particles larger than typical household dust.

What to Do Right Now

What to Do Right Now
  • Stop the system if the dust is heavy and unusual. If you’re seeing particles that look like insulation fibers, dark soot, or anything other than ordinary household dust, turn the system off at the thermostat. Running a contaminated system spreads the problem further into the ductwork and into your living space.
  • Check the filter and its fit. Pull the filter, hold it up to a light, and look at the frame edges. A filter that is bent, compressed, or noticeably smaller than the slot it sits in is bypassing. Note the size printed on the frame – you’ll want that information when you call.
  • Photograph the dusty vents now, before you touch them. A photo with a timestamp is useful diagnostic evidence. Take one of the register face, one of the first few inches inside the boot if you can remove the grille safely, and one of your filter and its housing. This gives a technician a starting point before they arrive.
  • Do not attempt to inspect or re-seal duct connections yourself in an attic, crawlspace, or wall cavity. Navigating these spaces safely requires training, and in systems that also carry combustion flue gas, disturbing connections creates a real carbon monoxide risk. If you suspect a duct leak in an enclosed or hard-to-access space, leave it for a technician.
  • Note which registers are worst. Walk through the house and rank the registers by how much dust has reappeared. If the pattern is uneven, write it down or mark it on a quick sketch. Asymmetric dust reappearance almost always points to a localized leak or a cleaning that missed certain runs – that pattern narrows the diagnosis considerably before anyone opens a panel.

How We Fix It

When your local CleanRun Air Duct Cleaning team arrives, the first thing the technician does is inspect what’s actually in the duct system before quoting the remediation path. That inspection is the basis for the written price – a figure you receive and approve before a single panel comes off. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, and it applies to every job, every time.

For incomplete prior cleanings, the service is Air Duct Cleaning using rotary contact equipment – Rotobrush – paired with a Nikro negative-air extraction unit drawing at the main trunk. Every run gets agitation and extraction, documented with before-and-after photos of each line. If inspection finds a duct leak contributing to the problem, Duct Repair & Sealing is added to the scope: the specific joint or section is identified, sealed with approved mastic or foil tape, and re-photographed. The typical remediation visit for a standard home runs two to four hours depending on system size and what the camera finds. Every job leaves with a Documented Photo Record as a standard deliverable – not an upsell, not a request. The 365-Day Done Right Promise backs the work in writing when you sign off.
